Obtaining The CIE
To obtain your Italian CIE (Carta d'Identità Elettronica), you'll need to follow several steps:
- Prepare necessary documents: Gather a passport-sized photo, your passport, your permesso di soggiorno (Permit to Stay), a copy of your codice fiscale (Italain Fiscal Code), your appointment slip, and a credit/debit card to pay the required application fee.
- Schedule an appointment: Contact your local municipal office (Comune) or use their online portal to schedule an appointment for applying for the CIE (Link Below).
- Attend the appointment: Show up at the scheduled time with all the required documents. You'll need to fill out an application form, and provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital signature).
- The application form will ask you for information such as your Italian address; your height (cm); your eye and hair color; your legal sex; if this is your first time applying for an ID; and if you would like to be an organ donor. You will also provide your contact information such as your email and your Italian telephone number.
- Payment: Pay the required fee for processing the CIE application. The amount may vary depending on your age and other factors.

- Packet: Upon completion of the application, the office clerk will give you a packet containing all the information for your future CIE, as well as the QR code to track the status of your ID. It will also provide instructions on how to register your ID card in the system.
- IMPORTANT: The Commune does not always contact you when your ID is ready. Track the status of your shipment! When it has arrived at the Commune, pick it up.
